Psychotherapy & Counselling
Psychotherapy and Counselling
Counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably. In my view, counselling is more focused and shorter whereas psychotherapy is more in-depth and longer term. Both are collaborative undertakings where together we work for a better understanding of your experiences, concerns, or challenges. For me, therapy is a dialogue and I don't offer 'techniques' or 'homework'. As a therapist, I view myself as a companion, working alongside you to help you find meaning in your experience, understand what may feel limiting in your life and uncover new possibilities.
My way of working is mainly informed by existential philosophy. This means that at the core of therapy is an exploration of the way we understand and construct our own particular way of being in the world. I have also been trained in psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches which I draw on if I feel this can be of benefit for my clients.
I believe that a therapeutic relationship based on trust, respect and openness is important for the work to develop in the most fruitful way. I am committed to providing a supportive and containing space so that you feel able to share your thoughts and feelings with confidence.
During our work we can focus on areas that are important for you and see how things have been in the past. As we look at the many aspects of your experiences, you may want to examine the choices that you have, and the potential to see things from a different perspective. I very often find that through deep exploration and clarification of their concerns, people are able to face up to their difficulties, and find their own ways to move forward.
